Bartender of the Month: Becky Moore from Hooters of Merritt Island Though my hometown of Killkilly is a bit of a backwater, it’s not nearly as unsophisticated as some might imagine. There’s the old loom museum, for one, and the cinema…which actually was recently gutted to become the new loom museum after the orginal one burned down. So there’s really only the one loom museum we have to recommend us to any tourists, then. But apart from the lone loom museum, there’s... [Read more...]

Over the last two years, I’ve been relentless and downright mean to Sam Rooks. Every time I see him land a trick I tell him it was sketchy, or weak, or that he should just go home. I never mean it, and actually wish I had just a fraction of his ability. The truth is that Sam is one of the most talented young skaters I know. He has a naturally relaxed style, whether on the street, in the park or in the bowl. After receiving impeccable marks on his final report card last June, Sam also volunteered... [Read more...]

Carcharias taurus, the Sand Tiger Shark Sharks have a terrible reputation in our area for some reason. Maybe it’s the attacks, maybe its the toothy grin that people see at the aquariums. Sharks were a large part of my life for many years, and until this weekend, I had one of the largest collections of shark and shark relatives in our area. I have encountered so many species in my time, and have been lucky enough to be able to retain mementos of the species that I had seen over the years. As the... [Read more...]

The Cocoa Beach-based quintet — armed with guitar, sax, upright bass and drums — offers a unique, soulful sound that can swing and jump just as hard as it can shuffle and groove. They’ve performed at a number of premier gigs and special events, including The House of Blues Orlando, Cocoa Beach Chamber of Commerce Sea Fest, Earth Awareness/Steve Miller Blues Bash,... Romeo! You seem like a very busy guy. What do you do in your spare time when you’re not giving out advice or making whoopee? “Gareth” (via email) A very good question, Greg. I am indeed a very busy advice columnist and whoopee manufacturer and usually spend my infrequent downtime on my patio overlooking the resplendent Atlantic Ocean or working on my dock, which is exceptionally large and always seems to require gentle yet rigorous attention. However, a few poor investment choices... [Read more...]
Danny Johnson has been performing stand-up comedy since 1998 at clubs, colleges, and corporate functions across the country. A native of Long Island, New York, Johnson started by imitating relatives and friends at an early age and putting on shows for whoever cared to watch. From grades 7 to 12, he reenacted comedy sketches with friends in his Catholic youth group, going on to perform his first open mic show at a local comedy club at the age of 18. Though he was hooked after that first appearance,... [Read more...]

Throughout a skater’s life the perception of “back to school” will be defined in many ways — some good, some bad. However, in the end, if the skater is patient enough, it will be a great thing. Right now, there are hundreds of skaters all across Brevard County who are fully bummin’ right now. Yes, it’s that time of year again, and the kids are back in school! There’s about to be a whole new set of book covers (do kids still use books?) and folders adorned... [Read more...]

Cocoa Beach Surf Museum News For some visitors to Florida’s beaches and warm weather, the word “quiver” might be a long-distant thought of a chilly night up north. For surfers around the globe, a quiver is not a chill, but the group of surfboards they own. The size and length of the boards in a quiver can vary depending on the type of wave for which a particular board is intended. Then there are quivers that have grown into collections. Surfboard collecting has become more common... [Read more...]
