November events at the Cocoa Beach Public Library: On November 7, the Library’s “People in Print” series will present Tom Howes, co-author of the best-selling non-fiction book “Out of Captivity: Surviving 1,967 Days in the Colombian Jungle.” At 1 p.m., Howe will speak about the amazing story of his and his co-authors’ five-and-a-half year fight for survival as hostages of the Colombian terrorist organization FARC. Copies of his book will be on sale for $26.99. Proceeds from books purchased at the event will go to the Library. “Treasures and Heirlooms,” an antiques and collectibles show-and-tell with Linda Margolis, founder and President of Brevard Antiques & Collectibles, will take place Tuesday, November 10 at 6:30 p.m. in the Jane von Thron Room. Also on November 10 at 7 p.m., Mike Knight, Brevard County Director of the EEL Program, will present “Update on the 1000 Islands.” Last year, the south 1000 Islands in Cocoa Beach were purchased for preservation by Brevard County’s Environmentally Endangered Lands (EEL) program. Knight will give a powerpoint presentation on the progress and plans of the program, including the removal of non-native invasive plant species, replanting efforts, and future recreation goals. If you’ve been wondering what’s happening in the islands, and what will be happening over the next few years, then this program will answer your questions. Friday, November 13 is the deadline for applications for the 3rd Annual Singer/Songwriter Contest due to be held on Saturday, December 5 at 1 p.m. Ten names will be drawn for the competition, which will be judged on originality, lyrics, melody, and overall performance by professional singer/songwriters. The Surfside Players will be holding open auditions on Sunday and Monday, November 8 and 9 at 7 p.m. for “Fiddler on the Roof” as well as their upcoming musical revue, “Holiday Cabaret.” “Fiddler” requires a large cast of all ages, including children and teenagers. Anyone may audition and no special preparation is required. Attendees will read lines from the script, sing passages from the musical score, and learn and practice a dance number, so wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you can move and dance in. A newly developed Port Canaveral third-grade curriculum helps Florida students meet the next generation of state standards in social studies, science, math, science, language arts, visual arts, and technology. The web-based EMBARK (Energizing Minds-Brevard Area Resources for Kids) course is being implemented as part of a partnership between Port Canaveral and Brevard County Public Schools (BPS) and is designed to make learning relevant with real-life applications. Port staff and a team of highly qualified Brevard educators created the integrated web-based lessons highlighting the significance of the international seaport and its benefits to the community. Lessons involve virtual tours prior to the students’ visit to Port Canaveral, where they will conduct hands-on field experiments and interviews with staff and tenants. The selection of Ralph Reigelsperger to serve as the City of Melbourne’s public works and utilities director has been announced. Reigelsperger, who is scheduled to begin work this month, was most recently the public works director for Hamilton, OH, where he also served as the city engineer. He will replace Bob Klaproth, who is to retire at the end of October after nearly 30 years of service to the City. As public works and utilities director for Melbourne, Reigelsperger will be responsible for seven divisions and 230 employees as well as Melbourne operations that range from water production and water reclamation to streets, stormwater management, facilities, and fleet management.

More than 200 thrill rides, amusement games, exhibits, free shows and food stands will be included in The Space Coast State Fair in Brevard County. The fair will run through November 9 at the 50-acre Cocoa Expo Center on S.R. 520, just west of Interstate I-95 in Cocoa. The Fair will be open at 5 p.m. on weekdays and from 1 p.m. to late on Saturdays and Sundays. Get Hammered at the Brevard Art Museum on Saturday, November 7 from 7-10 p.m. Get buzzed on great art when “Tools in Motion” opens at the Museum with this year’s fall fundraiser, “Get Hammered!” The event opens a fascinating exhibition where hammers, saws, wrenches, screwdrivers and other tools are transformed into art of great imaginative power. November 21-22 sees the 13th Annual ArtWorks “En Plein Air” Festival, hosted by EGAD (Eau Gallie Arts District). The well-recognized VanGo Mobile Museum takes off this month loaded with masterpieces by Picasso, Van Gogh and Cassette, to name but a few. Sharing world-famous, original artwork with school children who have never been to a real museum is just one goal of the educational unit on wheels. The exhibit of well-known masterpieces is provided by Brevard County artists “Pieces of Eight.” The painted reproductions were a project the group took on to learn more about the styles that influenced the art world. The local artists also published a collection of their work called “The Masters’ Pieces,” which will serve as educational background for the children. If you ever considered being a Child Advocate in the past but were unable to attend the lecture classes, another option is soon to be available. Starting the week of November 16, anyone who meets the requirements to be a Guardian ad Litem may sign up to take the majority of their training online. Guardian ad Litems must be 19 years of age, pass the background screen, provide references and complete 30 hours of training. After training, being a GAL only takes between 6 to 8 hours a month. Classes will complete on December 5 at the Moore Justice Center.
