Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson Summer of Fear Saddle Creek; 2009 He may have four names, but you only need to call him by this one: unforgettable. I drove past my destination because I was so wrapped up in this album — not once, but twice. Summer of Fear is an album of pain and sadness; it’s the work of a man who’s worn his heart on his sleeve for most his life. Remembering the past with a reverence one can only have when they’ve spent a lot of time in it, he takes us through... [Read more...]

Well, there goes another Christmas spent in flip-flops and baggies… Life is tough here in the Sunshine State! Gee, I sure wish I were up in the Great White North freezing my chestnuts off and shoveling snow from every inch of concrete on my property. Maybe I could even get “snowed-in” for a few days — that would be soooo cool! I think not. Being a third generation native Floridian, I made the determination long ago that areas prone to snow and cold weather should be relegated to the... [Read more...]

David shoots photo sessions for $40 pp. Do you think it's worth it to this guy? We do… FORECAST Caribbean Coast: When you see a northeaster heading off the coast around North Carolina, that creates a set-up for surf a week later on the Caribbean coast. January has consistent surf and nice weather. The breaks get crowded with locals and visitors from all over the world, but if you find the right trail or a good boat captain, you can find peaks all to yourself. Pacific Coast: Waves are plentiful,... [Read more...]

The Cocoa Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation has joined a statewide coalition of political, business, and environmental organizations to oppose oil drilling off the Florida Coast. We feel that the risk to our beaches and waters does not justify the benefits claimed by the oil lobby and that the money and effort would be better spent developing clean, sustainable energy sources for our state. Our coalition convinced the Space Coast League of Cities to adopt a resolution in opposition to oil... [Read more...]

After surfing for roughly 7 years in the Florida Panhandle and spending a month living in Australia, Jessica Williams decided to leave everything she knew behind to move to Satellite Beach in search of more consistent swell. Thanks to her broad background in aquatic sports, lifeguarding, beach service, training and certifying lifeguards, and teaching swim lessons and water aerobics, Jessica had no problem finding a job teaching surf lessons in Cocoa Beach shortly after her arrival in the area. Jessica... [Read more...]

Open: An Autobiography By André Agassi Knopf: 400 pages; $28.95 It’s difficult to imagine what André Agassi hoped to accomplish in his recently published autobiography “Open.” He certainly made no friends, and may have alienated the few that he has. Agassi offers no substantial insight into the pro tennis tour, offering pure autobiographical fodder by focusing on the demons that tormented him. Not all of those are psychological though; some of his former opponents are fair game, and all the... [Read more...]

It’s an ugly tree. The leaves are gnawed and shriveled. The branches are bare above the roofline; casualties of Frances and Jeanne. The trunk is twisted and thorny, but sound, and we keep this plant alive anyway. It shades our back porch. I was told you can’t grow them from seed. Oh, sure, they’ll sprout, but they won’t make it. And forget about fruit. These plants are inbred, crossbred and grafted; the trees are sterile if grown from their own seed. No sex organs… No breath of life…... [Read more...]

Do you ever watch the news or read articles in the paper and try to fit your own life into the stories? I mean, I hunt for treasure in junk stores all the time, but I have never found a million-dollar masterpiece hidden under long forgotten Uncle Charlie’s self portrait. And what about sports celebrities who rack up incredibly high scores… even in their spare time? Wow! Well, recently I’d been noticing all the stories about folks having trouble with their homeowner associations or condo... [Read more...]

Back in the day, Janus, some ancient god of beginnings and guardian of doors and entrances was the coolest guy around on New Year’s Eve in ancient Rome. I guess these ancients believed that Janus, who had two faces, could see backward and forward at the same time, and on December 31st they imagined Janus looking back at the old year and forward to the new one. So traditions began — giving gifts of branches, fruit, nuts, coins, etc. … Eventually, a couple of thousand years later, that led... [Read more...]

Photo: Andy Murch / Elasmodiver.com Chiloscyllium plagiosum, the Whitespotted Bamboo Shark Sharks are pretty cool, there’s no doubt about it. Whether you love ‘em or hate ‘em, you’re pretty much going to be interested in finding out more about them. I’ve written about many of the larger and more common ones you may encounter in our waters and beyond. I’ve written about the ones that scare the crap out of us in the surf, the ones we see during “Shark Week” that can bite your face off,... [Read more...]
