The Cocoa Beach Pier’s 2010 Reggae Beach Splash This year’s Reggae Beach Splash, which is held annually at the Cocoa Beach Pier, boasts one of the most impressive lineups in its long history. Reggae lovers should be no strangers to Ali Campbell, whose distinctive vocals helped catapult UB40 to fame during the ’80s. During his time with the band, they sold over 60 million records worldwide, toured across the globe, notched up four number #1 worldwide singles, over 40 Top 40 UK singles,... [Read more...]

Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz

Big John Bates and the Voodoo Dollz Big John Bates’s sound is best described as a combination of rockabilly, psychobilly, and dark rock n’ roll — think The Stray Cats playing with The Cramps and the Jon Spencer Blues Explosion — driven by highly danceable rhythms. Accompanied by his beautiful troupe of Voodoo Dollz, who every other song do a pulp-inspired burlesque performance or skit — from fire spinning to role playing nurses giving audience members “their medicine”... [Read more...]

The Cook Trio Moonlight Self-released, 2009 Less academic than its predecessors — 2005′s Gypsy Jazz Guitare and  2007′s Villa Saïd — the latest release from acoustic gypsy jazz band the Cook Trio, Moonlight, taps into the inherent humor and playfulness at the heart of their preferred genre. Which is not to say that they’d ignored those carefree facets of jazz manouche before — far from it. But Moonlight, recorded some five years after their founding, finds the... [Read more...]

Stovall Report: March ‘10 Looks like winter is slowly relaxing its grip on us here along the central Florida coast. With a few warm days here and there, the fishing really should pick up. Fishing overall has been the best right around Sebastian Inlet. Good numbers of black drum and sheepshead are being caught off the north jetty. Clams are the best bet for the black drum, and shrimp and fiddler crabs work for the sheepshead. Lots of bluefish are moving in and out of the Inlet. Silver spoons in... [Read more...]

Shark Report: The Puffadder Shyshark Haploblepharis edwardsii In an effort to cover the world’s most interesting sharks for you, it’s inevitable that I sometimes run into a brick wall. I had writers block something fierce this month, so I decided to go see Pakalolo’d Up this past Saturday at the Thirsty Lizard in Satellite Beach instead of writing. (A totally great time, by the way; I urge you to check out both the band and the Lizard.) Sunday arrived, and while nursing a ferocious... [Read more...]

St. Patrick’s Battalion By: Mickey Z During the buildup to the Mexican-American War (1846-1848), score of immigrant Irishmen joined the army for $7 a month. “The U.S. anti-immigrant press of the time caricatured the Irish with simian features, portraying them as unintelligent and drunk and charging that they were seditiously loyal to the pope,” Anne-Marie O’Connor wrote in the Los Angeles Times in 1997. “But cheap Irish labor was welcome. Irish maids became as familiar... [Read more...]

On Base: March ‘10 By Staff Sgt. Leslie Kraushaar, 920th Rescue Wing Alaska, known for its cold winters, tall mountains and unforgiving terrain, became the perfect spot for Air Force Reserve Pararescuemen (PJs) from the 920th Rescue Wing at Patrick Air Force to practice their winter Combat Search and Rescue (CSAR) training. The training is two-fold for these men. Not only is it gearing the group up for a deployment overseas, but it also keeps the PJs up-to-date on their qualifications. Here in... [Read more...]

Three Dog Night Three Dog Night

Three Dog Night Originally formed in 1968, Three Dog Night was enormously successful from the start. Danny Hutton, then a writer/producer at Hanna Barbera Records as well as a solo artist, met fellow founding vocalist Cory Wells while they were both touring with Sonny and Cher. Taking their name from a story about Australian aborigines who sleep with their dogs for warmth on cold nights in the outback (the coldest evenings are known as “three dog nights”), one of America’s most... [Read more...]

Brendhan Shanahan Brendhan Shanahan

Brendhan Shanahan Brendan Shanahan’s uncomplicated style and forceful diction make him both the perfect introduction to those new to Irish music and a powerful interpreter for those who’ve loved it for years. A true “Dub” (that is, native Dubliner), his passion for Ireland will convert any listener to his centuries-old ethos. Shanahan, who learned to sing and play the guitar as a youth, has performed in Dublin’s pubs for a decade, singing the traditional songs of Ireland:... [Read more...]
