Cocoa Brown Bag Jazz lunches are held every Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. throughout the month at the Myrt Tharpe Square Gazebo in downtown Cocoa Village. Cape Canaveral The City of Cape Canaveral is in the process of starting the fall season of their athletic leagues. Cocoa Beach The Cocoa Beach Police Department recently introduced the City Watch Program, a community safety initiative designed to enhance crime prevention efforts within the City. It operates as a partnership between the CBPD and the personnel of various City of Cocoa Beach departments. Employees are encouraged to prevent and reduce crime by alerting police to suspicious activities and people they may witness while on the job.
Cocoa Beach Public Library Programs and Events for September: Bestselling author Stuart Woods will be on hand for a book talk and signing of his latest Ed Eagle novel “Santa Fe Edge,” Saturday, September 25 at 2 p.m. The novel, which will be published by Putnam on September 21, will sell for $25.95. Books-A-Million will donate a portion of the profits to the library for books purchased at the book signing. The Surfside Players announce the dark comedy the opening production of their 2010-2011 season, “Glengarry Glen Ross,” by David Mamet. Eau Gallie The Eau Gallie Arts District (EGAD) will hold its monthly First Friday Art Walk event September 3 from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. Art studios, galleries, shops, boutiques and restaurants in the District will remain open late for a free art walk featuring new exhibition openings and receptions in area art galleries. Gallery openings will include the “Soothing Strokes” exhibition at Art & Antique Studio and Gallery, the annual “100% Pure Florida” exhibition at Fifth Avenue Art Gallery, and pottery making demonstrations at Indian River Potters’ Guild. Area artists will set up in Eau Gallie Square and the Space Coast Playboys will perform in the band shell from 6 to 8:30 p.m. In addition, a new organization and a new business will be open to the public during Walk. The Junior League of South Brevard (JLSB) will host a ribbon cutting and open house at their new location at 1501 Avocado Avenue from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. The ribbon cutting will take place at 6 p.m. The public is welcome to attend the open house to visit with League members and learn about how the JLSB actively supports the community. Melbourne The Melbourne Police Department is currently recruiting citizens who would like to be a part of the Volunteer Citizens Observance Patrol. Citizens who participate in the V-COP program are trained to assist the police patrol division. Applications are now being accepted for a 40-hour V-COP training class to begin on October 5. The training process includes instruction on observation techniques, police procedures, traffic control, safe driving techniques, and basic law enforcement rules and regulations. Applicants must be U.S. citizens, must have valid Florida driver’s licenses, and must undergo background checks. Each participant must be willing to volunteer at least 12 hours a month. Melbourne Beach Saturday, September 25 sees the 2010 Melbourne Beach Public Library Talent Show at 11 a.m. in the Library Meeting Room. The 25th Annual National Kidney Foundation Pro-am Surfing Festival will be held September 2-6, Labor Day Weekend at the Cocoa Beach Pier. The competition kicks off the following day at 8 a.m., and will feature special events on the beach for all ages — surfboard giveaways; Ocean Potion sunscreen giveaways; radio promotions; face painting; poster signings; live bands; a bikini contest; Club Zion Shaved Ice; Cocoa Beach Surf Company Surf School demonstrations and lessons on the beach, and tandem surfing demonstrations at the Pier. Antique Board Show The Cocoa Beach Surf Co. and Paul Eaton Productions are putting on an Antique Surfboard Show and featuring surf art exhibits through out the surf complex during the Labor Day Weekend. View exhibits of classic antique surfboards restored from different eras and talk surf stories with the collectors of the days before leashes. This will be a great opportunity for you to buy, sell, and/or trade your surfing treasures. Ricky Carroll will be exhibiting his treasures including classic balsa surfboards and there will be surf art exhibitors on hand as well. In addition, the CBSC Surf School will be hosting the “Legend Theatre,” which will be showing classic ’60s surf flicks throughout the day. 18th Annual Doctors Lawyers Weekend Warriors Surf Festival The event begins 8 a.m., Friday morning, September 10 when the first heats hit the water at First Peak. Competition continues until 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Friday evening, a surf stomp beach party will be held at “Jake’s Point,” the old Driftwood House in South Cocoa Beach. The proceeds from this surf stomp event as well as from the surf contest will benefit the Boys & Girls Club. Competition will resume Saturday morning at 8 a.m., September 11 until about 4 p.m. Over the last 18 years, over $250,000 has been raised for children’s charities in Brevard County through the efforts of Doctors Lawyers Weekend Warriors. If you’re a doctor, lawyer or a weekend warrior, you are eligible to surf in the event’s five categories: Doctors, Lawyers, Weekend Warriors, Wahines (women), and Fossils (over 50). Last month, we erroneously reported that sea turtle nesting season continued until October 1. Sea turtle nesting season in fact ends on October 31. If you find newly hatched sea turtles that are unable to crawl to the ocean or recently hatched sea turtles that havebeen “washed back” by strong wind or surf conditions, you may bring them to the Barrier Island Center (8385 S. Hwy. A1A, Melbourne Beach; 723-3556) where they will be cared for and released. If the BIC is closed, park outside the main gate, walk to the building entrance, and place hatchlings in the cooler located at the ramp gate to the left of the three orientation panels.
