The 10th Annual Waterman’s Challenge, June 11-12, 2011 COCOA BEACH SURF MUSEUM By Athena Sasso www.cocoabeachsurfmuseum.org When we lived on the West Coast, we went to Santa Cruz a lot and every time we went, we saw the car parked on the approach to the surf museum overlooking Steamer Lane. The car itself was an entire protest movement, a relic of the anti-contest sentiment of the late ’70s. We never saw anyone near it who looked like they would claim it. Yet every time we went, there... [Read more...]

Cuddles Cuddles is an 18-year-old Moluccan Cockatoo who eight years ago was the first parrot rescued by Pet Priorities, a rescue adoption shelter and training and sitting service that works diligently in the world of animal rescue. After spending years living in a veterinarian’s office and being bounced between several owners, Cuddles suffered from a life poor diet and lack of attention. She gradually grew so unhappy and mentally distraught that she began self-mutilating, plucking out... [Read more...]

Jennifer Zalanka of The Beach Shack By Paddy McDrinksey Don’t tell anyone, but I often get tired of slumming around the same smelly, smoky dives. Being raised in the muddy lanes of Killkilly wasn’t easy. But I don’t mean that literally. I mean, the lanes were muddy, as in “full of mud,” but I wasn’t actually raised in any of the muddy lanes, but in a house about a mile down the road from the muddy lanes. I wasn’t even allowed to play in the lanes. But you... [Read more...]

Ya’ll think I’m a crazy handful, but you should meet this badass grandma. You made me what I am today, Grandma, and without your faith in me, I wouldn’t be the nice upstanding member of society I am today. Happy Birthday, Grandma. I love ya! Now there aren’t many sea critters that I haven’t seen... [Read more...]

Well, with the passing of Memorial Day Weekend I guess we can officially kick off the summer season. Does that mean I can wear white, or can I not wear white? Aw, to hell with it… I’ll just wear the Floridian tuxedo: white t-shirt, board shorts, visor, and flip flops! It almost makes me feel sorry for the 9-to-5 ham-and-eggers wearing the shirt-and-tie business attire. But, then again, they are probably working in air conditioning. Oh well, I’ve tried that before and I always end... [Read more...]

June is by far one of my favorite times of the year to target schooling redfish, tarpon, and snook. Hopefully, this month will have calmer winds and cleaner water on the Banana River for sight fishing redfish. Once the water does clear up, endless amounts of mullet will show up on the flats, producing schools of redfish. Live bait and artificial lures will do the job just fine, especially when the fish are being very aggressive. If you get the chance to catch a ladyfish (which is crack for redfish),... [Read more...]

Damion Suomi & The Minor Prophets Go, And Sell All Of Your Things Hopeless Records; 2011 Simply put, Go, And Sell All Of Your Things is a compelling answer in a world and musical landscape that is passing out riddles and fallacies. Lyrically, Damion Suomi’s songs lead the listener by the hand through the course of “the Hero’s Journey,” originally described by Joseph Campbell in his study of mythology, “The Hero With A Thousand Faces.” Filled with the ideas... [Read more...]

Adele 21 Columbia; 2011 You know you’ve made it in America when one of your tunes is on “American Idol” and “Glee” within the same month. While the British songbird Adele is no newcomer to American fans, she’s finally getting the broad public exposure she deserves with “Rolling in the Deep,” the first single off her second album, 21. Titled after the singer/songwriter’s age, this record is a beautifully landscaped journey through the falling... [Read more...]

Bitter Bitch By Maria Sveland; Translated by Katarina E. Tucker Skyhorse Publishing; 240 pages; $22.95 H. L. Mencken once said that the only really happy folk are married women and single men. But Mencken never met Sara, the bitter bitch in “Bitter Bitch.” Sara is so unhappy, bitter in fact, that she must take a respite from husband and child and the cold of Sweden to lounge in the warmer clime of Tenerife. But the couples she observes lounging at poolside or ignoring each other at dinner... [Read more...]
