Sometimes I just have to sit back and laugh at myself. I mean it. I can seriously laugh at so many aspects of my life. From my looks and my goofy skate style to so many other things I do. Like when I stay up until the wee hours when I know I have a long day ahead of me the next morning. Or when I start a load of laundry only to forget about it until a day or two later and end up having to rewash the load again because of that brain burning odor. For some reason I never learn. Anyway, on to something... [Read more...]

At this time of year, the hardcore or desperately seeking can still be found in the lineup wearing wetsuits topped off with booties and gloves. The water temperature is hovering around the low 50s. For me, the lack of water time has less to do with the temperature than with the swells out of the north passing us by to the south. The sport of surfing has always been a great way to stay in shape, and dry land training or other types of on-the-water activities are a must during the winter. After a surf... [Read more...]

Surfrider Foundation, Cocoa Beach Chapter By John Hearin surfrider.cocoabeach@gmail.com www.surfrider.org/cocoabeach/ The Cocoa Beach Chapter of the Surfrider Foundation has joined a statewide coalition of political, business, and environmental organizations to oppose oil drilling off the Florida Coast. We feel that the risk to our beaches and waters does not justify the benefits claimed by the oil lobby and that the money and effort would be better spent developing clean, sustainable energy sources... Put another log on the fire and sit back for this month’s fishing report. Due to all the recent freezing temperatures throughout most of Florida, the fish have been the ones hit the hardest. In early January, several nights of freezing 30-degree weather dropped the water temperature so low in the river that a large population of fish died. Many of the local species like tarpon, snook, mangrove snapper, sheepshead, ladyfish, and catfish have washed up along the water’s edge over the past... [Read more...]

Hemiscyllium ocellatum, the Epaulette Shark By Bloody Bill As I’m finishing up this article before going to work the kitchen for $2 Taco Tuesday at Taco City, I realized these little sharks are more common in our area than I ever could have imagined. This is the second of my ongoing reports of common sharks we may see in our local aquariums, restaurants, and pet shops. This month’s species is one that caught my eye several years ago in a higher-end seafood restaurant in Stuart. My chick... [Read more...]

JEDI GRIND TRICKS By Scooter Newell If there’s any one thing that’s important to skateboarding it’s the local skate scene. Not the skateboard companies. Not the shoe companies. Not the X-games. Not the videos. Not even the newest magazine ads or articles (except, of course, this one). What we’re talking about here are the individuals who make up your skate scene. The skaters — from the rippers and the old guys, to the girls and beginners — the park operators,... [Read more...]

Costa Rica Surf Report By Greg Gordon http://www.crsurf.com FORECAST Caribbean Coast: This is another consistent month for surf, with waves mostly head-high plus, but reaching double overhead. Lots of rain showers as well, so make sure you have tread on the tires for the roads and something strong to clean out your ears after a surf session. Two major surf contests this month will bring out the locals, so show respect in the lineup. Pacific Coast: The Papagayo winds (from the northwest) really... [Read more...]

So I’m one V8, two McDonald’s cheeseburgers and three Tylenol into my Monday morning after Sunday’s NFL playoffs. I enter Stage-Two Recovery as I wrap myself up in my sweet new Snuggie and prepare for full hibernation. I’m a modern day cave man except my cave is lit not by campfire, but by the soft glow of the LCD flat screen. Alas, the sweet euphoria of an early afternoon couch coma is rapidly approaching, when suddenly, the dream bubble above my head evaporates like a cloud... [Read more...]

Boardrider of the Month: Jaime Ceruti Interview and photos by Scooter Newell I had no idea that Jaime had an injured wrist when we set out to take pictures for this piece. He had broken the growth plate in his right arm a couple of times and is currently healing, and by the look of the photos he’s obviously still able to skate. I’ve seen Jaime destroy contests, and when he’s free-skating with the crew he can be noted for his unique style and large bag of tricks on all types of... [Read more...]

Well, there goes another Christmas spent in flip-flops and baggies… Life is tough here in the Sunshine State! Gee, I sure wish I were up in the Great White North freezing my chestnuts off and shoveling snow from every inch of concrete on my property. Maybe I could even get “snowed-in” for a few days — that would be soooo cool! I think not. Being a third generation native Floridian, I made the determination long ago that areas prone to snow and cold weather should be relegated to the... [Read more...]
