Jerry Leiber and Mike (not Jeff) Stoller wrote "Jailhouse Rock" for Elvis Presley: it was "Hound Dog" that they wrote for Big Mama Thornton in 1952, redone by Presley in 1956. Jerry was indeed from Baltimore, but Mike was from Queens, NY.

Dear Don,

Remember when you held your event on Treasure Island Beach.

You had come into our Island Dreamz Bicycle Shop looking for a

donation. We had only been in business for a month or so, and we gave

you a new bicycle for your cause to auction off. Bob could use a letter

a letter to submit to the Chamber. They would like to do a article on

us. This would look really good in the article. Since you will be

back. If you could email it to me I would be so gratful.

    darlingtondreamz [at] gmail [dot] com

    Thank you,

    Linda

    would be great to include.

Hi, I agree that beach cities need to be shown more respect, but I disagree that just because you are lucky enough to live near the beach that you have more right to surf those spots. I feel localism is just another word for greed sometimes people think because they live near the beach they own the beach and whoever doesn't has no right to experiance the awesomeness of surfing.
on another note people do steal things in Kauai. I just got back from a trip there and someone broke into our car stole a boogie board, 500 dollars and an Iphone out of the locked glove box.

Howdy Ian, sure did enjoy meeting you and hearing your guitar and voice on the high seas recently. I'm the guy who knew who John Prine was, and then gave you a long list of songs. Turned out we both knew the Harp Inn and a few others. Safe travels and keep up the wonderful music.

I wonder if any of the top name surfers of the past years ever came to Surfeside Theater in Cocoa Beach to watch the surfing movies that I showed back in the seventies. And, did they get the inspiration for learning the sport from watching those fantastic shows?

Thoroughly enjoyed your shows on the Indie over the New Year, live music and banter at its best. Really hope we will be lucky enough to be on another cruise when you appear. Still think you would be brilliant at Grandma's feather bed. Keep on with the Brandy they still have way too much on board, now you know it goes well in a carajillio (you may need to check the spelling on that). Cheers xx

As has been pointed out to me several times, the Singing Revolution could easily have gone the way of the Prague Spring or the Hungarian attempt in 1956. Not to take away from the brave nonviolent actions of my parents and grandparents, the circumstances were very much to their favour: the Glasnost was a highly publicised "free speech" movement in USSR, Gorbachev couldn't very well up and use force right after declaring a new era that was aimed at revitalizing the crumbling, dying Soviet economy. The economy was so bad, in fact that according to some economists, the collapse of the Soviet Union was merely a matter of how and when.

In that sense, in those circumstances, what is truly miraculous about the Singing Revolution of the Baltics is that the three countries came out of it with a minimum amount of bloodshed and a very clear path to democracy - as we all know, not all republics that emerged from the Soviet Union got the same start. Some are now mostly democratic, some are still struggling with the legacy of Soviet idiocy. What the Singing revolution really did was that Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia had a popular movement BEFORE the collapse of the USSR where they had a chance to have a public discussion what do they want once they're independent. And how to get it. The beginning of the 90's was a very difficult time in our region and it could easily have degenerated to a mafia-ruled oligarchic puppet-region of Russia but because of the Singing Revolution, the (foreign) political aims of the Baltics were clearly backed by the majority of the people, even when there was no trade coming from Russia (as punishment) and nothing from the west either (yet. because they had no idea if the countries would survive and why piss off Russia?) - I remember my mom saying "we'll eat potato peels if necessary but we will not go back to that Soviet system"
