4/7: Book Signing by Chris Kridler Storm chaser and local author Chris Kridler will sign copies of her new novel, “Funnel Vision,” at Coco’s in the Threadneedle Mall (402 Brevard Ave., Suite C) during the Cocoa Village Gallery Walk from 4 to 9 p.m. The gallery walk gives participants a chance to fill out maps and compete for prizes. Along the way, they’ll enjoy music and refreshments. At Coco’s, they can meet Kridler, a veteran journalist and photographer who’s been chasing storms for more than 15 years. “Funnel Vision” follows brash tornado researcher Jack Andreas and Kansas photographer Judy Hale as they cross paths with each other, a host of obsessed storm chasers, Judy’s sultry sister and a hapless storm tour operator. Their road to disaster is filled with action, humor, romance and rapturous skies, as “Funnel Vision” takes readers into the heart of Tornado Alley — and the hearts and minds of the adventurers who populate the nomadic, geeky, exhilarating world of storm chasing.
Ponce De Leon Island? If you are against the naming of our barrier island after the brutal conquistador, Ponce de Leon, read on. De Leon is included in the Yale University Genocide Studies Program for committing acts of genocide as governor of the islands of Puerto Rico and earlier, Hispaniola, against the Taino people, the original Native American island inhabitants. His actions reduced their numbers in Puerto Rico from 30,000 to virtual extinction through massive forced slave labor, subjugation, and slaughter. (See: www.yale.edu/gsp/colonial/puerto-rico/index.html). De Leon also led the slaughter and enslavement of the Taino people in the province of Hiquey in Hispaniola, in part of the genocide of 900,000 Taino men, women, and children in 10 years (see: www.yale.edu/gsp/colonial/hispaniola/). If you are against naming of our barrier island “Ponce De Leon Island,” please contact the U.S. Board of Geographic Names — (the federal board that is making the decision): Lou Yost (Lyost@USGS.gov) and the Brevard County Commission — Chuck Nelson (D2.Commissioner@brevardcounty.us) and tell them “I strongly oppose the naming of the Brevard Barrier Island for the conquistador Ponce de Leon. Signed (your name and town)“. Honor our island’s 3,000-year-old Ais culture and reject this insulting name.

Hammock Preserve update. The City of Cocoa Beach ranked 7 out of the top 25 grant entries for “small development projects” that were recently recommended for funding by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection — Division of Recreation and Parks — Florida Recreation Development Assisstance Program (FRDAP). Last year, the City re-submitted a $50,000 “no-match” grant application that was previously approved in 2008, but was not funded due to cutbacks in Florida’s 2009 operating budget. The “no-match” grant, if funded this year, will help enhance the Maritime Hammock Preserve park located south of Denny’s Restaruant on the west side of State Road A1A. Planned improvements will include: a wildlife observation deck; walking paths; picnic tables, covered picnic pavillions, information kiosks, and a tetherball court. The City must now wait to see if sufficient funding will become available in Florida’s 2010-2011 budget formulation and approval process. For more information, please contact City of Cocoa Beach Grantwriter/Public Information Officer Jerry Stansfield at 868- 3329, or email:jstansfield@cityofcocoabeach.com.
