Washington state has confirmed the United State’s first case of the potentially deadly coronavirus. According to the CDC, on January 21st, a Washington state man has been diagnosed with the virus. Coronavirus broke out in China last month and has killed at least six people while leaving hundreds of sick as it continues to spread.
This particular species of virus infects the upper respiratory and gastrointestinal tract. It causes a cold with major symptoms and is prominent in the winter months. Coronaviruses can also cause pneumonia. You may have heard of the infamous strain of SARS-CoV that was discovered in 2003, causing SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome).
The man in Washington is in his 30s and is currently in a stable condition. The caution is because he had returned to the U.S. last week before screenings began. He arrived at the Seattle airport from Wuhan, where the outbreak started.
Screenings will expand throughout major airports. The director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Disease, Nancy Messonnier, states that the elderly and immune-compromised population should take caution and report symptoms quickly.
They are expecting more cases to hit the U.S. as well as globally.
