For over 15 years, Conservancy biologists have monitored the gopher tortoise population within the Christopher B. Smith Preserve. This presentation by biologist Melinda Schuman shares an update on that work, along with a look at the Preserve’s history and unique habitat. We’ll explore the life history of the gopher tortoise, why this keystone species is vital to the ecosystem, and the ongoing efforts to keep the Preserve healthy for tortoises and all the other wildlife that calls it home.
